British Breed Box –  A chance to try some of the UKs sheep breeds!

Did you know that the UK is home to over 60 different breeds of sheep – more than any other country in the world. You may well be familiar with Merino yarns imported from abroad or more local Blue Faced Leicester, but have you ever knitted with Ryeland, or Manx Loaghtan, Jacob or Hebridean? Charlie Button Yarns wants to celebrate that huge range of diversity and character and introduce knitters to a few British yarns and breeds that perhaps aren’t as well known. From nutty browns to flecked greys, from dark chocolates to crisp ivories there is a lot to be uncovered from exploring our British Sheep breeds.

There are two ways to get your taster of British sheep breed yarns.

DK British Breed Box £35– a 200g DK selection box containing 50g nuggets of each of the following:

  • Hebridean
  • Texel
  • Manx Loaghtan
  • Ryeland

Mystery British Breed Box £27 – a 150g mix of British Breeds made up of three surprise 50g nuggets. The yarn could be either DK or 4ply (or a mix of both!) but will always be 100% single breed yarn.

Each option will come with an information sheet about the yarn and the sheep breeds and their history. These boxes are a pre-order item as they are made to order.  Your box will be dispatched within two weeks. This allows us to make the most of the precious yarns and ensure we make the right amount to meet demand.

All the yarns are sourced from local farmers and small-holders in the UK (mostly from around Lancashire in the North West of England), so the supply chain is very small making these yarns sustainable and low impact on our planet.

About Charlie Button Yarns

All the yarns are created from fleeces from farms local to me in Lancashire, UK. They are sorted by hand and then processed and spun by a one-woman mill specialising in small batch processing. This means we can work with much smaller quantities of fleece so we don’t have to blend with other breeds and can get just the yarn we want.

You wont find the same consistency and uniformity as you would from a more commercially produced yarn. The yarn has its own unique identity – just like the sheep it comes from.

Because I worked with a small number of farms, with a smaller number of sheep, the skeins produced are limited and may change every year so make sure you get enough for your project!
